5-Day Kurdistan Itinerary: Cities, History and Mountain Scenery

Five days gives you room to leave Erbil without turning every day into a transfer. This balanced route pairs the region's strongest first-visit experiences — a living historic city, the mountain road towards Rawanduz, a highland town and one second city or heritage stop — with practical overnight choices. It works best with a private driver or rental car, though sections can be adapted around shared taxis and day tours.

The shape of a comfortable five-day trip

The most useful decision is whether you want a mountain-heavy trip or a city-and-culture trip. The day-by-day plan below puts the Hamilton Road and Rawanduz at the centre, then gives you a choice on the final two days: stay north for Duhok, Amedi and Lalish, or return east for Sulaymaniyah and Dukan Lake. Do not try to include both branches unless you accept very long drives and little time on foot.

The route is a framework for conversations with a driver, guide or tour operator. Mountain roads are affected by weather, construction, local traffic and visibility, and the opening of individual attractions can change. Confirm the route locally shortly before setting out, especially in winter or after heavy rain.

  • Use Erbil for the first night and as a reliable arrival base.
  • Sleep in or near Soran/Rawanduz if you want sunrise and a slower mountain morning.
  • Choose Duhok for a northern heritage loop, or Sulaymaniyah for museums, bazaars and Dukan Lake.

Transport, luggage and overnight strategy

A driver is often the easiest option for a five-day route because the memorable sights sit along roads rather than inside one walkable centre. Agree what is included before leaving: fuel, waiting time, route changes and whether the driver is also acting as a guide are separate questions. If you rent a car, read our car-rental guide and be realistic about mountain driving, parking and night travel.

Pack a small day bag for the mountains and leave heavier luggage at a city hotel when possible. A warm layer is useful even when Erbil feels hot, while sturdy shoes, water and sun protection matter on canyon viewpoints and uneven old-town lanes. Mobile coverage can be inconsistent in valleys, so download maps and keep the address of your accommodation written down.

Choosing the final branch

The northern branch is the better fit for dramatic scenery, old mountain towns and a compact heritage loop. Duhok works as a base for Amedi, Lalish and Zakho, although each outing should be checked for local access and timing. The eastern branch is better for food, museums, urban culture and the broad waterscape around Dukan Lake. Both are worthwhile; the right choice depends on whether you want more road scenery or more time in city neighbourhoods.

If your fifth day is also your departure day, sleep near your departure airport rather than assuming a cross-region transfer will be stress-free. This is particularly important when flights, road conditions or border-area traffic leave little recovery time.
